The Tonehammer Marching Band is a unique library focusing on capturing the powerful, tight sound of high school marching drum corps.
Mike was a percussionist back in high school. He returned to his old alma mater 14 years later to capture the feeling and sound of playing in a high school marching drum corps for this library. We decided to record indoor and outdoor versions of the drum line to provide the user with a little more freedom. The goal was not to simply capture the sound of watching a drum corps, but to create the feeling of actually being in the drumline yourself, all the way from rehearsal to the big game. The indoor version was recorded in a wood, tile and fabric surfaced rehearsal hall. The outdoor recordings were done on the football field, so there are occasional stray elements buried in the sound from passing pedestrians and onlookers. That's what you get for recording in the real world. We weren't able to get the marching bass drums in the hall, so we opted for the old 48" concert bass that's been in use there since the 70s. We've also done some live marching bands and parade ambiences to really put you into the action. This library has all of the flavor and verve of a classic high school marching drum line, with plenty of pop, crack, whump and boom to bring a little more life into your percussion lines

Each drum is multisampled with both left and right hand grip, from soft to hard hits. For example, the snare consists of 10 different hits from soft to hard with both left and right hand grip. The Celtic Nylon Harp is a small-sized harp with a height of nearly 39 inch (98 cm) and is usually designed for traditional music. The wooden instrument ranges in three octaves between C2 and C5 and has got 22 strings which are made of nylon and are plucked with the fingers. The harp has a lever close to the top of each string; when it is engaged, it shortens the string so its pitch is raised a semitone (sharped note if the string was a natural). The warm sound of the nylon strings is inspiring and adorable.

Every second note of the 22 strings of the Celtic Nylon Harp was recorded in several velocity layers and 4 Round Robin variations. We recorded the harp in two different mic positions (firstly very close and secondly at the sound hole at the rear of the harp), giving us different sound variations. We expanded the range from C1-G5 by tuning the strings beyond the intended key. With the ModWheel you can control the length and decay of the strings giving you feeling of damping. Beyond that you have got the possiblity of using the harp in a glissando or an arpeggiator mode.

After the great success of Mr. Sax T, we were asked by our customers to extend the Sax family. Here are two brand new brothers, Mr. Sax A., and Mr. Sax B., exploiting the same technology, but based on completely new sample material, with a lot of new added features.

The Sax Brothers?
Yes, the male members of the saxophone family.
Miss Sax S (the soprano) is presently under evaluation for feasibility.

What’s new in Mr. Sax A, B & T ?
The Alto and Baritone Sax are completely new instruments, designed and programmed for the new NI Kontakt 3.5 Player. The current version is 1.51.

As in Mr. Sax T, v. 1.02, the main panel allows for monitoring and inputting control data. It includes a drop down menu for Keyboard, Breathcontroller, Yamaha and Akai windcontroller input, symmetrical and asymmetrical pitchbend response, velocity or CC controlled portamento time, etc.

Automatic recognition of the audio card sample rate has been implemented, thus obviating the need of manually setting the corresponding value on the instrument GUI.

Channel aftertouch is now recognized and can be used to control several parameters, such as vibrato intensity or rate, subharmonic, growl or flutter intensity. A user defined smoothing parameter helps reduce any sudden jump of the less-than-optimal aftertouch response of several keyboards.

In addition, MIDI remapping of incoming CCs is now possible, by a dedicated GUI (see below).

Like the trumpet, the trombone is one of the most versatile, dynamic, flexible and expressive musical instruments. It covers an incredibly wide range of sounds and moods. Whether a classical sacred work, a military march or a powerful fanfare, a pop song or a huge orchestral arrangement - the trombone is an indispensable instrument in a vast majority of musical styles. However, it’s extremely difficult to emulate, even more than the trumpet, due to the presence of the slide - a true challenge for developers of virtual instruments. That’s why we chose it next.

Instrument technology

The Trombone family expands Samplemodeling™ technologies beyond the original limits. An entirely new class of Harmonic Alignment has been developed, allowing continuous transition across virtually infinite dynamics, at the same time perfectly preserving the peculiar, “spiky” waveform of this instrument. Multi-microphone anechoic recording, coupled to a specially devised “early reflections” impulse response, allowed to reproduce the full, rich timbre of the instrument including its radiation pattern, adding at same time a virtual space to the anechoic sound.

The base material of the instruments (two Tenor, one Valve and one Bass Trombone) consists of 714 MB of samples, chromatically performed by a professional trombone player over a very wide dynamic range. All samples are unlooped, and have a minimum duration of 8 sec. As “The Trumpet”, the Trombone engine is structured according to an adaptive model, based on the performance “fingerprints” of the real instrument. The purpose of the model is to minimize the differences between the real phrases and those played by the virtual instrument.

Proprietary modal resonance IRs, innovative techniques for sample modulation, and advanced AI midi processing are used for real time construction of all articulations and morphing across dynamics, vibrato, legato, portamento, trills, vibrato-like endings, shakes and so forth.

Pseudo-random detuning, based on real performance-derived trends, is another outstanding new feature of The Trombone, adding further realism.

A completely new chapter concerns the slide. The real trombone is one of the few wind instruments that can produce a true glissando up to six semitones. Though very difficult to obtain with a sample-based instrument, the effect of the slide has been perfectly reproduced in our virtual trombone by a novel application of the “Harmonic Alignment” technology. Ultra-realistic slide effects can be obtained by proper use of the pitchbend, but are also automatically activated by overlapped legato. As in the real instrument, a continuous glissando effect will be obtained if the portamento interval is within +/- 3 semitones.

From the original classic analog sounds to any bizarre "sci-fi" drone texture the G2 offers a number of previously unavailable sonic opportunities. Despite its bizarre complexity this instrument is the "secret weapon" of several famous top producers' and musicians' technical arsenal around the world.

The sound designers of Wavescapes Studio spent lots of time just for creating G2 sounds that really works, then recorded and processed these sounds as multisamples in 24 bit format. Sampler presets are carefully keymapped, programmed and fine-tuned using all relevant KONTAKT 2 parameters (including DCA, DCF, LFO, modulation matrix, glide, etc.) manually. Realtime control possibilites are also added: just move the modulation wheel to change several parameters in real-time in order to make sound “breathe”!
Sampler presets in this pack went through a multiple selection process, so 113 real club sounds were selected from many hundreds. Some of them contain massive layers creating really FAT sounds - just check the XTRA category! We categorized each presets into ARP, BASS, LEAD, PAD, XTRA categories for easier identification while looking for the right sound for your song in the making. Finally we compiled the sounds into a single KONTAKT 2 Bank format (*.nkb) file, so you do not have to worry about missing samples anymore.
